Netflix’s PUBG Series: Donald Glover to Direct and Star

Netflix is developing a live-action PUBG series, with Donald Glover set to direct, write, executive produce and star, Krafton announced on October 30, 2026. His brother Stephen Glover joins as writer and executive producer. There is no release window, no cast beyond Glover and no plot yet. Here is everything confirmed, who is involved, and the big open question: how do you adapt a game that has no story?

The Glovers worked together on FX’s Atlanta, which Donald created and starred in; he won Emmys for acting and directing on it (Deadline). Deadline also reports the deal came together after lengthy negotiations, with Netflix bringing Glover to the project.

The adaptation problem

PUBG (originally PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) launched in 2017 and, as Variety points out, has no plot: up to 100 players drop onto a map, loot weapons and vehicles, and fight until one is left. That gives the writers a format, not a story, which is closer to The Hunger Games or Battle Royale than to a character-led game like The Last of Us. The upside is freedom; the risk is a show that only borrows the name. No plot details have been released.

This is also not Netflix’s first PUBG project. Deadline notes that Krafton announced plans for a PUBG film and series back in 2020, and an animated series from Castlevania producer Adi Shankar was announced for Netflix in 2021.

Our take

Attaching a creator of Glover’s profile as director, writer and star suggests Netflix sees this as a prestige project rather than a quick tie-in. “In development” is still an early stage, though, so do not expect it on Netflix before 2027 at the earliest; that is our estimate, not an announcement. Video game adaptations keep growing, and this sits alongside the run of big gaming news this month, from November’s biggest releases to GTA 6 on November 19.
