What’s in the remaster
- Official The original game and Thief Gold. PlayStation Universe counts 12 missions, plus the three extra missions and five enemy types that Thief Gold added in 1999.
- Official The Tarnished Mirror. A new campaign by the creators of the fan mission The Black Parade. It is set between Thief and Thief II and sends Garrett into a drowned, Lovecraftian necropolis.
- Official KEX engine. Nightdive’s engine, also behind its Quake and Doom 64 remasters.
- Reported Modern features. PlayStation Universe lists 4K and 120fps, Trophies, a weapon wheel, rumble and gyro aiming.
- Official Mod support. Compatible with fan missions, including The Black Parade.
Why Thief still matters
Looking Glass Studios’ Thief was one of the first games built around light and sound. You play Garrett, a master thief trained by a secret order called the Keepers, and the best runs end with no bodies at all. It shaped stealth games from Dishonored to Hitman, and its fan scene has kept making missions for more than 25 years. The Black Parade, the fan campaign whose team made The Tarnished Mirror, is one of the best-known examples.
It lands in a busy month. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, and Thief follows two weeks later at a far lower price. If you like the idea of a game that rewards not killing people, GTA 6 has something similar: see how the GTA 6 Criminal Profile works.
