Sam Houser is not a distant figurehead on GTA 6. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told Edge that Rockstar’s president and co-founder shaped the game’s direction from the outset and “remains integrally involved in every aspect” of its creative development. He described a review routine in which the two of them play every milestone build and send notes to the teams.
Last checked on November 3, 2026. The details come from Edge’s GTA 6 cover story, published on GamesRadar+ on October 29, and GamesRadar’s follow-up on November 2. Houser himself isn’t quoted. Most of what follows is Edge’s paraphrase of Nelson, so we mark the one line Nelson says directly.
What Rockstar says about Houser’s role
| Claim | Status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Houser shaped GTA 6’s direction from the outset | Rockstar via Edge | Nelson to Edge, paraphrased |
| He discussed the map layout with Aaron Garbut | Rockstar via Edge | Leonida’s layout, with Rockstar North’s co-studio head |
| He helped develop characters and story elements | Rockstar via Edge | And takes part in major creative decisions |
| He isn’t a “taste director” | Rockstar via Edge | Nelson rejected the Rick Rubin-style comparison |
| He and Nelson review every milestone | Rockstar via Edge | “Sam and I will identify problems or issues that we then solve with and across the teams” |
| Houser’s own view of the game | Not revealed | He wasn’t interviewed |
Why this came up
Sam Houser rarely speaks in public, and his brother Dan, the writer behind much of the series, left Rockstar in 2020. That fed a theory among fans that GTA 6 was being made without strong creative leadership from the founders, or that Sam only signed off on work at the end. Edge put that idea to Nelson, who compared it with the way music producer Rick Rubin is sometimes described, a “taste director” who guides by instinct. Nelson rejected it. In his account, Houser works on the substance: the map, the characters and the story.
How the milestone reviews work
The routine Nelson describes runs through the whole project:
- Play the build. Houser and Nelson regularly play the game together.
- Spend weeks on it. Each milestone gets a couple of weeks of evaluation.
- Write notes on everything. Feedback covers lighting, animation and audio as well as narrative, tone and game mechanics.
- Send it to the teams. Notes are sorted and passed on, the teams fix the problems, and the cycle starts again.
“Sam and I will identify problems or issues that we then solve with and across the teams,” Nelson said. Edge adds that individual teams run similar reviews of their own, producing “thousands and thousands” of notes, and that this repeated scrutiny is how Rockstar keeps one creative vision across a project made by thousands of people.
There is no fixed design bible either. Nelson admitted early design documents were written but went “out of date quite quickly”. The team’s phrase, per Edge, is that “the game tells you what it needs”.

What the other leads told Edge
The interviews give a rare look at the people finishing GTA 6. Garbut said the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than before, and joked about the team’s age: “We’re old.” Of the scale of the project he said, “I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.” Hooker was careful about predictions: “I can’t guess the public reaction,” he said. “We’ve made what we wanted to make.” Nelson’s verdict was short: “It’s ready.” For more from the same feature, see everything new from the Edge GTA 6 preview.
What it means for players
Our take Not much changes in the game itself. It does answer a worry fans had about GTA 6 after Dan Houser’s exit: that the series would lose its creative direction from the top. Nelson’s account says the opposite. One of the founders is still reviewing it closely, down to the lighting and audio. Whether that shows up as a sharper story is something only the game, out on November 19, can answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sam Houser working on GTA 6?
Yes. Rob Nelson told Edge that Sam Houser, Rockstar’s president and co-founder, helped shape the game’s direction from the start and remains integrally involved in every aspect of its creative development.
What does Sam Houser actually do on GTA 6?
According to Nelson via Edge: he discussed the map layout with Aaron Garbut, helped develop characters and story elements, and takes part in major creative decisions. He and Nelson play each milestone build for a couple of weeks and send feedback to the teams.
Is Dan Houser involved in GTA 6?
Dan Houser, Rockstar’s co-founder and former Vice President, Creative, left the company on March 11, 2020, according to a Take-Two filing. He went on to found Absurd Ventures. Rockstar has not credited him on GTA 6.
Who is the director of GTA 6?
Rockstar doesn’t name a single director. Edge describes Rob Nelson and Aaron Garbut as co-studio heads and heads of development at Rockstar North, with Phil Hooker as a third head of development, while Sam Houser shapes the overall creative direction as Rockstar’s president.
Did Sam Houser give an interview about GTA 6?
No. The Edge cover story quotes Nelson, Garbut and Hooker. Houser’s role is described by Nelson, and most of it is Edge’s paraphrase, not a direct Houser quote.
What is a taste director?
It is a description sometimes used for music producer Rick Rubin, a person who guides a project mainly through taste rather than hands-on work. Nelson rejected the idea that Houser plays that kind of role on GTA 6.
