GTA 6 is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB in North America, PEGI 18 in the UK and Europe, R18+ in Australia and adults-only in South Korea. That makes it an adults-only game in every major market, just like GTA V. This guide puts every rating we could verify in one table, explains what each content descriptor actually means, and ends with a practical checklist for parents setting up a PS5 or Xbox before November 19.
Official means we read it on the rating board’s own database. Reported means it comes from store listings or press reports that we could not match to the board’s own site.

ESRB: M for Mature 17+
Official The ESRB’s database lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as M (Mature 17+) with seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The interactive element is In-Game Purchases. Rockstar shows the same rating on its own GTA 6 page.
Two things are worth noticing. The listing says “In-Game Purchases”, not “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)”, which is the label the ESRB uses for loot boxes and similar paid random rewards. And the descriptor list is the same as GTA V’s, except that GTA V’s rating also carried “Users Interact” because of GTA Online. GTA 6’s listing does not include it.
In the US and Canada the ESRB rating is not law, but most major US retailers ask for ID for M-rated games, and console store purchases follow the account’s age settings.
PEGI 18 in the UK and Europe
Reported PlayStation Store and Xbox Store pages in Europe show PEGI 18 with the Violence, Sex and Drugs descriptors and the In-Game Purchases notice. Some Xbox listings still show “PEGI 18 Provisional”. There is no Gambling descriptor on the listings we checked.
Reported In early October a detailed PEGI page briefly appeared and was then taken down. Dexerto and other outlets reported that it mentioned decapitation and dismemberment and that the player can use drugs from the inventory. We could not see the page ourselves, so treat those details as reported rather than official.
In the UK, PEGI 12, 16 and 18 ratings are legally enforceable, so it is an offence for a shop to sell GTA 6 to anyone under 18.
Australia: R18+
Official The Australian Classification register lists Grand Theft Auto VI as R18+, dated August 27, 2026, for “high impact violence, sex scenes and drug use”. Themes, language and nudity are rated strong impact. R18+ is legally restricted to adults in Australia. The register lists the game as multi-platform.
South Korea: adults only
Reported South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee (GCRB) gave GTA 6 an adults-only rating on October 16, 2026, according to DigitalToday. Korean PlayStation Store listings show 89,800 won for the Standard Edition and 112,800 won for the Ultimate Edition. For other regions, see our GTA 6 price guide.
Is GTA 6 more extreme than GTA 5?
On paper it lands in exactly the same place: M in North America, 18 in Europe, R18+ in Australia, with the same ESRB descriptors. Ratings do not measure “how much” content a game has, only the highest category it reaches, so the label alone cannot tell you whether GTA 6 is more graphic. The reported PEGI details and the trailers suggest a similar tone to GTA V, with the usual mix of violence, drugs and satire. Our opinion
Parents’ checklist before November 19
| Step | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| Set an age limit for games | PlayStation Family app or Settings > Family and Parental Controls | Xbox Family Settings app |
| Block or approve purchases | Monthly spending limit per child account | “Ask to buy” and spending limits |
| Limit play time | Daily play time limits in the Family app | Screen time schedule in the app |
| Control online chat | Communication and user-generated content settings | Communication and multiplayer settings |
Because GTA 6 includes in-game purchases, a spending limit is the most useful setting even for older teens. If you are buying the game for a household, our editions guide and digital vs physical guide cover which version to get. For everything else, see the GTA 6 hub.
