Rockstar UK Union Vote Runs Through GTA 6 Launch Week

Rockstar Games’ UK staff will vote on union recognition from November 12 to November 26, 2026, a window that runs straight through GTA 6’s November 19 launch. The ballot was announced on October 27 by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB). If it passes, the union says it will be the biggest recognised union in the UK games industry, covering more than 1,600 people. Here is what is being voted on, who can vote, how it ties into the ongoing tribunal over last year’s dismissals, and what it means (and does not mean) for the game’s release.

How to read the labels: Official is confirmed by the organisation itself in a public statement, Union says and Rockstar says are each side’s own position as quoted by the press, and Reported is reporting we could not confirm from a primary source.

What is happening

Union says The IWGB announced on October 27 that Rockstar’s UK workers will vote on whether the company should formally recognise the union. The terms of the ballot were, in the union’s words, “agreed upon by workers and management”, after talks that Kotaku reports have been running since July. A recognised union would get a formal say over pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working and generative AI policy.

Reported According to Kotaku, the union first asked Rockstar for voluntary recognition earlier in the year, and the ballot is the route the two sides settled on.

We found no public statement from Rockstar or its parent Take-Two about the ballot itself as of November 1, 2026.

Who can vote and how big the union would be

Union says The IWGB told Game File the bargaining unit would include more than 1,600 workers, which it describes as nearly all roles at Rockstar’s UK studios below director level. Rockstar’s UK operation includes Rockstar North in Edinburgh, which leads development on GTA 6, as well as studios such as Rockstar Leeds, Lincoln, London and Dundee.

Reported For scale, Bloomberg has reported that Rockstar employs more than 4,700 people across 12 locations, so the vote covers roughly a third of the company. It does not include the large studios in the United States and India. The closest comparison is the Blizzard union in the US, which the Communication Workers of America puts at about 1,900 members and which signed its first contract with Microsoft in 2026.

The tribunal in the background

The vote comes a year after Rockstar dismissed a group of staff in the UK and Canada. Reports put the number at 34, of whom 31 were union members, and 23 of them are challenging their dismissals at an employment tribunal in Glasgow.

  • Union says The workers and the IWGB say the firings were union-busting.
  • Rockstar says Rockstar has said the dismissals were for gross misconduct, specifically for distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, and not because of union membership.

Closing submissions are scheduled for November 17-18, the two days before launch. No date has been given for a decision. The tribunal and the recognition vote are separate processes: one result does not decide the other.

Does this affect the GTA 6 release?

No, based on everything public. This is a recognition ballot, not a strike vote, so nobody is being asked whether to stop work. Rockstar’s November 19 date and the November 12 preload are unchanged, and the union has not linked the ballot to any industrial action. A “yes” result would mean collective bargaining over issues like crunch and overtime in future projects, including GTA 6’s post-launch updates. For launch logistics, see our preload time and release time by country guides.

Why it matters

Crunch at Rockstar has been a public issue since Red Dead Redemption 2, when reports of long hours were followed by the studio saying it had changed its working practices. A recognised union at the studio behind the biggest entertainment launch of the year would give UK staff a legal basis to negotiate rather than rely on policy changes. It would also be a test case for the wider UK industry, where recognised unions have so far been small. Our opinion Whatever the result, the timing guarantees the vote will be part of the launch-week conversation.

We will update this article when the result is announced. For everything else about the game, see the GTA 6 hub.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Rockstar union vote?

The IWGB says Rockstar UK staff will vote from November 12 to November 26, 2026, which spans the GTA 6 launch on November 19.

Is Rockstar going on strike?

No. The ballot is about whether Rockstar formally recognises the IWGB union for collective bargaining. It is not a vote on strike action, and no industrial action has been announced.

How many Rockstar workers would the union cover?

The union told Game File the bargaining unit would be more than 1,600 workers, nearly all UK roles below director level. That would make it the largest recognised union in the UK games industry.

Will the union vote delay GTA 6?

There is no sign of that. GTA 6 is still dated for November 19, 2026, with preloading from November 12, and nothing in the ballot affects the release.

What happened to the fired Rockstar workers?

Reports say 34 staff were dismissed in late 2025, 31 of them union members. 23 are challenging their dismissals at a Glasgow employment tribunal, with closing submissions on November 17-18, 2026. Rockstar says the dismissals were for gross misconduct.
