The GTA 6 “New Zealand trick” says you can set your console or store to New Zealand and unlock the game about 18 hours before the US, around 12:00 in Madrid on November 18. Part of that is backed by store listings. The rest is a fan theory that Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have not confirmed.
Last checked on November 3, 2026. We are not telling you to do this. If you try it, understand the risks below first. The safe answer is to wait for your own midnight, and our GTA 6 release time by country page lists it for your country.
What is confirmed and what is not
| Claim | Status | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Confirmed | Rockstar’s launch announcement and store pages |
| Rockstar has announced an exact unlock hour | Not announced | Rockstar names the day, not the time. Polygon asked Rockstar to confirm the staggered times and reported no confirmation |
| New Zealand unlocks at 11:00 UTC on November 18 | Store listing | The New Zealand PlayStation Store listing shows 18/11/2026 11:00 AM UTC. The New Zealand Xbox store listing also shows a November 18 release date. These are store timestamps, not a Rockstar statement |
| The game unlocks at local midnight in every country | Store listing | IGN and Polygon, reading GTAVice’s collection of PlayStation Store timestamps, report local-midnight unlocks starting in New Zealand (IGN counts 15 regional times). Neither is a Rockstar announcement |
| Changing an Xbox console to New Zealand starts the game early | Unconfirmed claim | Windows Central says it should work “in theory” but warns Rockstar and Take-Two could block it. Nobody has tested it on GTA 6 |
| A second New Zealand PSN account starts the game early on PS5 | Unconfirmed claim | Reported by IGN and Polygon. It needs a separate New Zealand account (IGN: funded with a New Zealand gift card) and a second purchase, and your save would sit on that account |
| Region changes are against the rules | Depends | Microsoft documents the Xbox console Location setting. Sony says PSN country can’t be changed and must match billing. See the risks section |
When does GTA 6 unlock in New Zealand?
The New Zealand PlayStation Store lists a release time of 11:00 UTC on November 18. New Zealand is on daylight time (UTC+13) in November, so that is 00:00 on Thursday, November 19 there. Spain is on UTC+1, so the same moment is 12:00 on Wednesday, November 18. Your own midnight in Spain is 23:00 UTC, 11 hours later.
| Place | Local time | UTC |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | Nov 19, 00:00 | Nov 18, 11:00 |
| Spain (Madrid) | Nov 18, 12:00 for the NZ moment; Nov 19, 00:00 for Spain’s own unlock | Nov 18, 11:00 / 23:00 |
| UK | Nov 18, 11:00 for the NZ moment | Nov 18, 11:00 |
| US East Coast | Nov 18, 06:00 ET for the NZ moment; Nov 19, 00:00 ET for the US unlock | Nov 18, 11:00 / Nov 19, 05:00 |
All of these times are reported from store listings. See GTA 6 release time by country for the full table and how we read each listing.
Is it a rolling midnight release or one global unlock?
The PlayStation Store listings point to a rolling release: each region unlocks at 00:00 local time, so New Zealand goes first and the Americas last. Rockstar has not said this in a statement. If Rockstar chose a single global unlock time instead, a New Zealand setting would do nothing. The Xbox and disc situations are also unclear: Rockstar has not published a separate time for Xbox, and GTA 6 boxed copies are reported to contain a digital download code, so there is no separate disc unlock to exploit.
How the trick is supposed to work on Xbox
The version going around X says that you pre-order and pre-load on your normal account, set the console Location to New Zealand and restart, then launch at New Zealand’s midnight. The Location setting is a standard Microsoft option. Microsoft’s support page describes it as Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location, followed by a restart.
What nobody has confirmed is that GTA 6 will accept it. Windows Central, which also covered the idea, said it could not think of a reason it would not work, but added that Rockstar and Take-Two might have blocked it, and that a day-one patch or an online check could stop an offline start. In other words, it is a theory built on how other games with local-midnight unlocks have behaved. We have not tested it, and we are not aware of anyone who has.
Why it is harder on PS5
Sony states that your account’s country or region can’t be changed once the account exists, and that it should match your billing information. Voucher codes must match the account region, and a game on disc can only use add-ons from its own region. IGN and Polygon both say the only route on PS5 is a separate New Zealand account. IGN adds it would have to be funded with a New Zealand gift card, and Polygon says GTA 6 would then be tied to that account.
Rockstar also published how pre-order codes are region-locked on PlayStation. According to The Sixth Axis, a PlayStation code bought in New Zealand works on accounts registered to the “Rest of EMEA and Asia” group, which also includes Spain, while Xbox codes are not region-locked. That rule is about where a code can be redeemed. It does not move your unlock time.
The real risks before you try
- Risk You pay in another currency. The New Zealand Xbox store lists the standard edition from NZ$139.95 and the Ultimate Edition from NZ$174.95. Microsoft says account balance doesn’t move between regions and can’t be transferred.
- Risk Microsoft recommends changing region only if you are moving. Its support page says items you get in one region might not work in another, including Game Pass, apps and games. The account country can’t be changed again for three months.
- Risk Payment and billing. After a region change, Microsoft asks you to update your billing information at your first purchase. Don’t enter an address or card that is not yours.
- Risk Rockstar’s terms. The Xbox store listing says violating the Terms of Service “may result in restriction or termination of access to game or online account.” We found no statement that a region change is a violation, but don’t use a VPN, a fake address or any method that misstates where you live.
- Risk PlayStation account rules. Sony asks for an accurate country and billing details. Some guides online suggest a fake New Zealand address and a New Zealand gift card for PS5. We don’t recommend it: it can breach the store’s terms and could put your account or purchase at risk.
- Risk It may simply not work. A day-one patch, an online licence check or a single global unlock would all end the trick. You would have paid, changed your account and gained nothing.
What people are saying on X
The idea spread fast around November 1. A post from @GTAVI_Countdown, a fan account, claimed Xbox players can set their location to New Zealand and play 18 hours early. It had more than 300,000 views when we checked. A post from @SynthPotato laid out a step-by-step PS5 version with a New Zealand account and gift card. TweakTown’s own post said it requires buying the game in that region and that Rockstar has not confirmed unlock times. Other users, such as @ChunkeeTee, questioned whether it is worth paying twice just to play a few hours early.
These are fan posts, not announcements, and none of them cites a Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft statement. Treat them as claims.
What we would do instead
- Buy through the store tied to your real account and pre-order before the bonus window closes. The Xbox store lists it as November 19, 23:59:59, without naming a time zone.
- Pre-load from November 12, as reported, and keep enough storage free.
- Check your own unlock time in our release time by country table and watch the live countdown.
- Follow the GTA 6 hub for any Rockstar announcement of the exact unlock hour. If it says one global time, we’ll update this page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play GTA 6 early by switching my Xbox to New Zealand?
Nobody can promise it. The New Zealand Xbox and PlayStation store listings show a November 18 release date, and the PlayStation Store timestamp is 11:00 UTC (12:00 in Madrid). Rockstar has not confirmed an unlock time for any country, so the early unlock is an unconfirmed claim. Changing the console Location to New Zealand is a normal Microsoft setting, but it may not unlock the game, and your balance, subscriptions and store prices change with it.
Does the New Zealand trick work on PS5?
Not on your own account. Sony says an account’s country or region can’t be changed after the account is created, and it must match your billing details. Guides that suggest a second New Zealand account also need a New Zealand payment method and a second purchase of the game. Do not use a fake address or a made-up billing detail: it can breach PlayStation’s rules.
What time does GTA 6 unlock in New Zealand?
The New Zealand PlayStation Store listing shows 11:00 UTC on November 18, 2026, which is midnight on November 19 in New Zealand (UTC+13). That is 12:00 on November 18 in Spain. Rockstar has confirmed the launch day, not the hour, so treat the time as reported, not official.
Is GTA 6 a rolling midnight release or one global unlock?
The PlayStation Store listings suggest a rolling release at local midnight, with New Zealand first. Rockstar has not confirmed it. If Rockstar uses one global unlock instead, a region change would give no head start.
Can I get banned for changing my Xbox region?
We found no Microsoft statement that changing your console Location is a ban risk, and Microsoft documents how to do it. The risks Microsoft does describe are practical: items and subscriptions may not work in another region, account balance does not move, and the account country can only be changed once every three months. Rockstar’s terms say violating them can restrict access to the game or account, so don’t use a VPN, fake billing details or anything that misstates where you live.
Will I have to download a day-one patch first?
Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 needs a day-one update. Pre-loading is reported to start on November 12. If the game needs an online check or a patch, the region change may not help. Pre-load on your normal account first and check our preload time guide.
What is the safe way to play GTA 6 as early as possible?
Pre-order or buy in the store that matches your real account, pre-load as soon as it opens, and be ready at your local midnight. Our console prep checklist covers storage, updates and accounts.
