Get Your PS5 or Xbox Ready for GTA 6: Checklist

GTA 6 preloads on November 12 and launches on November 19, 2026, and the most common launch-day problem will be storage, not the game. A 210 GB download has been reported but Rockstar has not confirmed it, and that would not fit on an Xbox Series S 512GB alongside much else. Use this checklist in the next ten days to get your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S ready.

The checklist

  1. Pre-order digitally if you want to preload. Official Preload opens on November 12 for digital pre-orders (times by country). Physical copies also need a large download; see digital vs physical.
  2. Free up at least 250 GB. Our math We suggest 210 GB for the reported size, plus a buffer for the day-one patch and for the console to unpack the files.
  3. Update the console now. Install the latest system software before November 12 so it does not hold up the preload.
  4. Turn on automatic downloads in rest mode. On PS5, allow downloads and updates in rest mode in the power-saving settings. On Xbox, use the sleep (standby) power mode and turn on automatic updates.
  5. Set the install location. On PS5, choose console storage or an M.2 SSD under Settings > Storage > Installation Location. On Xbox, choose internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card.
  6. Do not rely on a USB drive to play it. Official PS5 games cannot be played from USB extended storage; they must be copied back first. Official Xbox Series X|S optimized games must be on internal storage or an expansion card.
  7. Clean and ventilate. Official Sony advises at least 10 cm (4 in) of space around a PS5 and clear vents. Dust it with the power off. Open-world games run the console hard for long sessions.
  8. Check your connection. Our math At 100 Mbps, 210 GB takes about 4 hours 40 minutes; at 50 Mbps about 9 hours 20 minutes, before any slowdowns on launch day.

Will GTA 6 fit on your console?

Our math Approximate usable space on a console with nothing else installed, minus the reported 210 GB. Usable figures are as reported by Digital Trends and The FPS Review; the system software reserves the rest.

Console Usable space (approx.) Left after 210 GB Verdict
Xbox Series S 512GB ~364 GB ~154 GB Fits, but little room for anything else
Original PS5 (825GB) ~667 GB ~457 GB Fits; delete a couple of big games
PS5 Slim / Digital (1TB) ~848 GB ~638 GB Comfortable
Xbox Series X 1TB ~802 GB ~592 GB Comfortable
PS5 Pro (2TB) ~1.8 TB+ 1.6 TB+ Plenty

Adding storage

PS5 / PS5 Pro Xbox Series X|S
Fast expansion M.2 NVMe SSD, PCIe Gen4x4, 250 GB to 8 TB Storage Expansion Card
Speed 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended Same speed as internal storage
Extra parts A heatsink or heat transfer sheet is required None, plug into the rear slot
Play from USB? No for PS5 games (storage only) No for Series X|S optimized games

Official Sony’s support page says the M.2 drive must be a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD (M.2 SATA is not supported), lists the 5,500 MB/s recommendation and says not to use one without a heat-dissipation mechanism. You can move games between the drives, but all of a game’s data must be in one place.

Launch-week tips

Frequently asked questions

How much space do I need for GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published a file size. A 210 GB PS5 download has been reported. We suggest clearing about 250 GB to leave room for a day-one patch.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive?

No. PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play, and Xbox Series X|S optimized games must be on internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

The 512GB Series S has about 364 GB of usable space, so a 210 GB game fits only if most other games are removed.

What SSD do I need for a PS5?

A PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD between 250 GB and 8 TB, ideally 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink or heat transfer sheet, according to Sony.

When can I preload GTA 6?

From November 12, 2026 for digital pre-orders. The game unlocks on November 19.
