In GTA 6 you can carry four guns on your body at once: two concealed handguns at all times, plus two long guns, one slung on your back and one held in your off hand. Everything else lives in your personal vehicle or in a weapon locker. That is a big change from GTA V, where your character pulled a rocket launcher out of thin air. This guide explains the limit, how people and police react to what you carry, and how to plan a loadout before launch on November 19.
The carry limit, in Rockstar’s words
Official Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained the system in an interview reported by GamesRadar+ and GamingBolt in September 2026: “You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns, and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off hand, one on your back if you want to carry two.”
His reason: “In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people, and they don’t react. That doesn’t work here.” Rockstar says the old bottomless inventory no longer fits a world this detailed.
| Slot | What fits | Visible to NPCs? | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concealed 1 | Handgun | No | Official |
| Concealed 2 | Handgun | No | Official |
| Back | Long gun (rifle, shotgun and similar) | Yes, usually tolerated | Official |
| Off hand | Second long gun | Yes, people move away | Official |
| Everything else | Stored in your personal vehicle or a weapon locker | n/a | Official lockers / Rockstar via Edge trunk |
Rockstar has not said exactly where melee weapons, throwables such as grenades, or heavy weapons such as launchers fit. Treat any list of “slots” for those as a guess until the game is out.
How people and police react
Official Nelson said Leonida’s residents are “more nuanced than before, so if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it, and they react and start moving away from you.”
Rockstar via Edge Rockstar’s Edge preview adds that crowds edge away and some characters challenge you, and the game allows “a degree of latitude” before carrying turns into a wanted level. A weapon seen by witnesses also becomes one of the clues in the new police report, which you can clear by dropping it. Our wanted system guide covers the full heat system.
| What you are doing | Likely reaction | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Handguns concealed | None | Official |
| Long gun slung on your back | Usually fine | Official |
| Long gun in your hand | People move away; some challenge you | Official / Rockstar via Edge |
| Weapon seen during a crime | “Weapon” clue added to the police report | Rockstar via Edge |
| Dropping the weapon | Removes that clue | Rockstar via Edge |
Where the rest of your guns go
- Rockstar via Edge Your car’s trunk. In the Edge preview, the Scooter Bros phone app delivers your vehicle for a small fee, and your weapons are kept in its trunk. See our Edge preview roundup.
- Official Weapon lockers. Rockstar’s Ultimate Edition description mentions garages with weapon lockers to “customize your loadout for any occasion”, as reported by Kotaku and Dexerto. The Ultimate Edition costs $99.99; see GTA 6 editions compared.
- Official Picking up weapons. The Extended Look footage shows weapons taken from downed enemies mid-fight, so your loadout can change during a mission.
GTA V vs Red Dead Redemption 2 vs GTA 6
If you played Red Dead Redemption 2, the new system will feel familiar. Arthur carried two sidearms and two long arms and left the rest on his horse. GTA 6 swaps the horse for your car.
| GTA V (2013) | RDR2 (2018) | GTA 6 (2026) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guns on your body | Every weapon you own | 2 sidearms, 2 long arms | 2 concealed handguns, 2 long guns |
| Long guns visible | No | Yes, on shoulders | Yes, back and off hand |
| Where extra guns live | Not needed | Your horse | Personal vehicle, weapon lockers |
| NPC reaction to carrying | Mostly when you aim | To drawn weapons | To how you carry, not only aiming |
| Status | Released game | Released game | Official Rockstar, Sept 2026 |
Other combat details Rockstar has shown
Reported Hands-on reports from the September preview events list free aim as the default, with aim assist “stickiness” adjustable, enemy dots removed from the radar, colour-coded hit markers, optional kill cams, and a slow-motion Focus ability. Jason and Lucia can also pass guns to each other. These come from outlet write-ups rather than Rockstar’s own pages, so expect small changes in the final game.
Our loadout checklist for launch week
- Pick two handguns you trust. They are the only guns you can carry without anyone noticing, so they are your default for walking around towns.
- Keep one long gun on your back, not in your hand. Rockstar says a slung rifle is usually tolerated; carrying one in your hand makes people move away and raises your risk.
- Use the second long-gun slot only for missions. Taking it out in public is the quickest way to draw attention.
- Park your personal vehicle near the job. It holds the rest of your arsenal, and the Scooter Bros app can bring it to you.
- Drop a gun that witnesses saw. It removes the weapon clue from the police report.
- Check the lockers if you own the Ultimate Edition. They are Rockstar’s tool for swapping whole loadouts.
- Do not count on a heavy-weapons slot. Rockstar has not explained launchers or explosives yet.
Frequently asked questions
How many guns can you carry in GTA 6?
Four on your body: two concealed handguns at all times, plus two long guns, one on your back and one in your off hand. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson confirmed this in September 2026.
Can you carry two rifles on your back in GTA 6?
No. Rockstar says you cannot put both long guns on your back. One goes on your back and the second is carried in your off hand.
Do NPCs react to guns in GTA 6?
Yes. A long gun on your back is usually fine, but one in your hand makes people move away, and some challenge you. A weapon seen during a crime becomes a clue in the police report.
Where do you store weapons in GTA 6?
In your personal vehicle’s trunk, per the Edge preview, and in weapon lockers, which Rockstar mentions in the Ultimate Edition description.
Is the GTA 6 weapon system like Red Dead Redemption 2?
Broadly, yes. RDR2 also limited what Arthur carried and kept the rest on his horse. In GTA 6, your car plays the role of the horse.
