Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” shows about 27 minutes (26 by TechRadar’s count) of PS5 gameplay and cutscenes, and it confirms several systems for the first time: switching between Jason and Lucia, a six-star wanted level, quick-time events, slow-motion aiming and a wide range of activities. This is a summary of what the footage shows, based on our reading of the official video and published breakdowns. We have not played the game.
What the Extended Look shows
Gameplay and cutscenes blend together
The footage moves straight from play to cinematic scenes and back. In the opening mission Jason guides Lucia through an apartment block; in a later chase Jason shoots out of the window while Lucia drives, and the scene cuts to a cinematic before control returns. TechRadar’s breakdown notes that these hand-offs are frequent.
Character switching is built into missions
You can switch between Jason and Lucia with one button, and the footage shows a mission where they get separated and control hands over from one to the other after a cutscene.
Combat: slow-motion focus and weak zones
Jason uses a focus meter that slows time, and an enemy is highlighted with red and yellow zones, which TechRadar guessed are kill and disable zones. We cannot confirm what the colours mean until Rockstar explains them. Weapons can be taken from fallen enemies mid-fight, each lead has a weapon wheel, and the footage shows weapons being swiped from downed enemies.
Quick-time events are back
In a fight, Lucia gets an on-screen prompt with two options. The one shown ends with her hitting an opponent with her heel. It is an old-school touch, and the footage suggests the choice changes the outcome of the moment.
A six-star wanted system
GTA V had five stars. The Extended Look shows a six-star system, and police chases where you can shoot out tires so pursuing cars flip and crash.
Activities beyond missions
The footage includes racing on a track with cars and bikes, fanboats, jet skis and canoes on the water, and Lucia base jumping off a skyscraper with a parachute.
Interface and driving
TechRadar says the HUD is cleaner than GTA V’s, and WIRED notes that driving uses a minimap that looks like a real GPS map.
What it does not show
- Performance: Rockstar has not published frame-rate or resolution targets that we could find. The footage was captured on PS5 only.
- Map size and the full story: the Extended Look is a highlight reel by design.
- Online: nothing in the footage covers a multiplayer mode.
- Xbox and PS5 Pro versions: Rockstar’s site says GTA 6 “plays best on PlayStation 5”, and the PlayStation Store lists “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, but there are no side-by-side numbers. See our platforms guide.
Our read
The footage shows a game that is more scripted than GTA V in its missions but with more room around them. The strongest ideas are the character switching and the mix of playable and cinematic moments. The risk is the same as with any showcase: it is edited, so whether the pacing holds over a full campaign is something only the release can answer. Our opinion It is based on the public footage, not on playing the game.
