Edge magazine’s GTA 6 cover story is the most detailed hands-off look at the game so far. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson played the current build for 90 minutes with no script, and Rockstar’s three heads of development explained systems that the trailers only hinted at: a police “heat” system built on witness descriptions, a Criminal Profile that affects the story, granular weather, buses and trains, and a map roughly twice the size of GTA V’s. Here are the 15 details that matter most, with what is confirmed and what is still open.
Rockstar via Edge means the detail comes from Rockstar developers speaking to Edge, or from what Edge saw in the live demo, in the feature written by Simon Parkin and published online by GamesRadar+ on October 29, 2026. It is not a Rockstar press release, but it is first-hand. We checked the key points against other coverage (Kotaku, Creative Bloq, ComicBook) and found no contradictions.
The 15 biggest new details at a glance
| # | Detail | What Edge reports |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Map size | Roughly twice GTA V’s map; Rockstar says Leonida’s landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2 combined |
| 2 | Interiors | “An order of magnitude more interiors” than previous games (Aaron Garbut) |
| 3 | Pedestrians | Every NPC art-directed, around 600,000 animations, personality traits that shape reactions |
| 4 | Heat system | Police track your description, partner, clothes, CCTV and weapon, shown as icons on screen |
| 5 | Criminal Profile | Scale from “Professional” to “Irredeemable” that influences the story |
| 6 | Jason and Lucia | Closeness measured on a four-point scale; they cannot fully split up |
| 7 | Weather | Clouds driven by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season; storms can lightly damage aircraft |
| 8 | Day and night | A substantially longer day-night cycle than GTA V |
| 9 | Roads | Narrower than GTA V’s, to feel “a more believable size” |
| 10 | Carrying weapons | Pedestrians react to a gun in your hands, not only when you aim it |
| 11 | Car theft | Some drivers flee, some fight back armed; newer cars can have trackers |
| 12 | Police tactics | Stinger strips and K-9 units that can pin you down |
| 13 | Transport | Working bus and train systems across Leonida |
| 14 | Your cars | Scooter Bros app delivers your vehicle; every car has a fuel gauge and engine health readout |
| 15 | Pacing | Some story missions are gated: you may need to raise cash before the next job |
Leonida: bigger, but the point is density
Rockstar via Edge The map is “roughly twice the size of GTAV’s”, and Rockstar says the total landmass, including Vice City and its surroundings, is “nearly as large as the playable maps of GTAIV, GTAV and RDR2 combined”. Edge stresses that density matters more than acreage: Garbut says the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors”, with homes that carry signs of the people who live there. We break down every official size comparison in our GTA 6 map size guide.
Two smaller changes affect how big the world will feel. Roads have been narrowed from GTA V’s wide layouts, and the day-night cycle has been “extended substantially” because, Nelson says, GTA V’s timings made “everything” feel “too fast” at this level of detail. Kotaku also picked up the slower cycle in its October 29 report on the feature.
Pedestrians who notice you
Rockstar via Edge Rockstar set up a Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors and producers to make Leonida’s population feel individual. Every NPC was art-directed, which produced around 600,000 animations, and pedestrians carry traits such as temperament and aggression that decide how they respond. In the demo, a man Jason stared at unclipped his dog’s leash and the dog chased Jason down the street.
Weapons work differently too. In GTA V people rarely reacted until you aimed at them. In GTA 6, a shotgun slung on your back is treated differently from one held in your hands; crowds edge away and some characters challenge you. Edge says there is still “a degree of latitude” before that becomes a wanted level.
The heat system and the Criminal Profile
Rockstar via Edge Instead of waiting for stars to fade, you shake the police by becoming harder to recognise. The heat system tracks what the police know: your physical description, whether you had a partner, what you wore, whether CCTV caught you and what weapon you carried. Each item appears as an icon at the top of the screen. Split from your partner, change clothes or drop the weapon and that piece of evidence goes away.
Separately, the Criminal Profile rates Jason and Lucia’s behaviour from “Professional” to “Irredeemable”, shown with angel and devil icons. Incapacitating or intimidating instead of killing keeps you on the professional side. Rockstar told Edge the profile “will influence how Jason and Lucia’s story unfolds”. It has not said how much.
| GTA V | GTA 6 (per Edge) | |
|---|---|---|
| Losing the police | Leave the search area and wait out the stars | Remove the evidence in the police report: clothes, partner, weapon |
| Wanted levels | Five stars | Six stars, shown in the Extended Look |
| Pedestrians and guns | React mostly when aimed at | React to how you carry a weapon |
| Police tools | Roadblocks, helicopters | Adds stinger strips and K-9 units |
| Player morality | No system | Criminal Profile, Professional to Irredeemable |
Jason and Lucia’s relationship
Rockstar via Edge Their closeness sits on a four-point scale that usually rises with time spent together: beach walks, cycling, the gym (once you buy a membership) or driving around. You can shape how close they are, but they cannot turn away from each other entirely, and Nelson would neither confirm nor deny whether they can marry. “We start them wanting to be together,” he says, “but, as the game progresses, it’s yours to keep or yours to lose.”
Weather, transport and cars
- Weather. Rockstar via Edge Clouds move independently, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. You can see a storm form in the distance, roads get wet and dry at different rates, wind changes how boats handle in a bay, and flying through severe weather can lightly damage an aircraft.
- Buses and trains. Rockstar via Edge Both run as full systems. Head of development Phil Hooker says he checks that buses arrive on time and has “memorised all of the routes”.
- Calling your car. Rockstar via Edge The Scooter Bros phone app delivers your vehicle for a small fee, and your weapons are kept in its trunk.
- Fuel and damage. Rockstar via Edge Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout. Edge says cars go a long way before running low.
- Car theft jobs. Rockstar via Edge A phone app called WAINK lists models wanted by fences, with their security and tracking features. High-end cars ping their location to the police, and part of your payment depends on the car’s condition.
The screenshots: 12 new, 14 in total
Official Rockstar supplied official screenshots for the feature, credited to Rockstar Games on GamesRadar+. Reported Insider Gaming counts 12 new images among 14 published, with new looks at Grassrivers and Ambrosia. Other coverage points to an underwater hammerhead shark, a biker gang in a small town and Lucia holding a pistol outside a convenience store. Other fan sites count up to 15 because a few had been seen before. Our header uses an image from Rockstar’s own Grassrivers set, not one of the Edge shots.
What is still not confirmed
- How much the Criminal Profile changes the story, and whether there are multiple endings.
- Whether Jason and Lucia can marry (Nelson would not say).
- Any GTA Online details, PC version or performance targets. None were in the feature.
Our take
The trailers sold GTA 6 on spectacle. The Edge feature describes something different: a game where being a criminal is meant to feel risky, with heat, witnesses, armed drivers and trackers working against you. If the systems behave as described, the first hours could feel slower and more improvised than GTA V. That is our reading of a hands-off preview, not a review. Nobody outside Rockstar has played it yet.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I read the GTA 6 Edge preview?
The full Edge 430 cover feature, “The state that never sleeps” by Simon Parkin, is free to read on GamesRadar+. The print issue went on sale on October 29, 2026.
Did Edge play GTA 6?
No. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson played the current build for about 90 minutes while Edge watched. It was unscripted, but it was not hands-on for the journalists.
How big is the GTA 6 map according to Edge?
Roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map. Rockstar also says Leonida’s landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.
Does GTA 6 have K-9 police dogs?
Yes. In the demo, a K-9 unit joined a chase and pinned Jason to the ground, according to Edge.
Can Jason and Lucia break up in GTA 6?
Not completely. Edge reports that you can shape how close they are on a four-point scale, but they cannot fully turn away from each other.
