PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6: Which Console Should You Buy?

If you want to play GTA 6 on launch day, the cheapest way in is an Xbox Series S at $499.99 and the most strongly recommended is a PS5. Rockstar’s own site says GTA VI “plays best on PlayStation 5”, and Microsoft itself calls the Series S the lowest-cost way to play GTA VI. There is no official performance comparison yet, so this guide uses only official prices and wording. Our GTA 6 platforms guide covers what each store lists. Launch is November 19, 2026.

Which should you buy?

  • You already own one: play on it. Both are announced platforms.
  • Buying one for GTA 6 and money is no object: PS5 is the safest choice, because Rockstar and Sony both say it plays best there. PS5 Pro is listed as Enhanced; we don’t know what that changes.
  • Tightest budget: Xbox Series S, from $499.99, or $399.99 refurbished.
  • Prefer Xbox: Series X from $749.99 is optimized for Series X|S. There’s no published gap with PS5, so we won’t promise one.

Things people get wrong

  • You don’t need a disc drive. Physical copies are a download code. A PS5 Digital Edition or any Xbox works.
  • Storage matters. A PS5 download of 210 GB is reported, not official. Check the file size guide and your free space.
  • No official GTA 6 bundle exists. As of October 23, Vice Atlas found none from Sony, Microsoft or Rockstar. Some UK carriers sell their own pairings.
  • Buying the game: see where to pre-order GTA 6.

Our verdict

Until reviewers test the finished game, this is a decision about price and platform loyalty, not performance. If you have a console, don’t buy a new one. If you’re choosing, PS5 is what Rockstar points to, and Series S is the cheapest route. We’ll update this page after launch with measured results.
