GTA 6 targets 30 frames per second on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has not promised a 60fps performance mode. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told YouTuber Davy Jones in August that the game runs at 30fps for now and that he would “consult the technical team” about a 60fps option “at launch or later”. With 17 days to go, nothing official has changed. Here is what is known, what the PS5 Pro might add, and how to set up your TV for a 30fps game.
What is confirmed and what is not
| Question | Answer | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate on consoles | Targets 30fps | Rockstar says via Davy Jones, reported by Push Square and Tom’s Hardware |
| 60fps performance mode | Undecided; “at launch or later” is being discussed | Rockstar says |
| PS5 Pro support | Listed as “PS5 Pro Enhanced” on the PlayStation Store | Official |
| What the Pro improves | Not specified | Unknown |
| Xbox Series X|S | “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” | Official |
| Resolution | Not announced; Digital Foundry estimated 1440p upscaled to 4K in the Extended Look | Reported |
| PC version | Not announced | Official none yet |
Why 30fps, and can the PS5 Pro hit 60?
Reported Digital Foundry’s analysis, summarised by Tom’s Hardware, points to the CPU as the limit: crowd density, traffic, physics and weather simulation, rather than graphics. The PS5 Pro has a much stronger GPU but nearly the same CPU as the base PS5, so a big jump to 60fps on the Pro is unlikely. A 40fps mode for 120Hz TVs is a common guess, but Rockstar has not mentioned one.
Rockstar’s track record
| Game | At launch | Later |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V | 30fps on PS3/360 (2013) and PS4/Xbox One (2014) | 60fps Performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (2022) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 30fps on PS4/Xbox One (2018) | No native current-gen version yet |
| GTA 6 | 30fps target (2026) | 60fps “at launch or later” under discussion |
Our math History says Rockstar’s 60fps versions come with new hardware or a PC release, not as quick patches. We would plan around 30fps and treat anything more as a bonus.
Our checklist: make 30fps feel better
- Turn on your TV’s Game Mode. It cuts input lag, which matters more at 30fps.
- Turn off motion smoothing. TV interpolation adds lag and artefacts in games.
- Enable 120Hz output and VRR if your TV supports them. These only help if Rockstar adds a 40fps or unlocked mode, but they cost nothing.
- Use HDMI 2.1 and the cable that came with the console.
- Lower the aim-assist friction only after you feel the controls. Free aim is the default, and reaction time feels different at 30fps.
- Wait for the day-one patch notes and a technical review before deciding a PS5 Pro upgrade is worth it.
Our console prep checklist covers storage, preload and network settings, and PS5 vs Xbox Series X for GTA 6 compares the consoles.
Frequently asked questions
Does GTA 6 run at 60fps?
Not confirmed. GTA 6 targets 30fps on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said the team would consider a 60fps option “at launch or later”.

Yes, according to Rockstar’s comments in August 2026. The 30fps target applies to all consoles.
Will GTA 6 have a performance mode?
