GTA 6 PS5 Firmware 14.22: Do You Need to Update?

GTA 6 appears to need PS5 system software version 14.22 or later, the update Sony released this week. The latest version on Sony’s official support page is 26.07-14.22.00, and backend data spotted by the PlayStation Game Size account lists 14.22 as the minimum for GTA 6, up from 14.10 in early October. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed the requirement, but installing the update now costs you nothing and avoids a surprise when the preload opens on November 12. Here is what is official, what is reported and how to update.

What Sony actually released

Official Sony’s PS5 system software page lists version 26.07-14.22.00 as the current update. The release notes are short: “We’ve made some security fixes.” The two previous entries on the same page are 26.07-14.20.00 and 26.06-14.10.00, so this is a small point update rather than a feature release. You will not see new menus or settings after installing it.

Why GTA 6 is linked to it

Reported Push Square reported on November 2 that the PlayStation Game Size account, which tracks PlayStation Store backend data, found GTA 6’s required system software had been raised to 14.22.00.00. When the same data was checked in early October, the minimum was 14.10.00.00. Games on PS5 commonly ask for a recent firmware version, and a console on older software simply asks you to update before the game starts.

Reported The reason most outlets give is piracy. PS5 jailbreaks work on older firmware, and Push Square and Wccftech both describe the higher minimum as Sony making sure one of the biggest launches ever cannot run on hacked consoles. That is a reasonable reading, but it is an interpretation: Sony’s notes only mention security fixes, and Rockstar has said nothing.

Does it matter for normal players?

Barely. If your PS5 updates automatically, you may already be on 14.22. If it does not, you will be asked to update the first time you launch GTA 6, which takes a few minutes. The real risk is timing: on November 19 millions of people will try to start the game at once, and you do not want to be downloading a system update at midnight. Do it this week.

How to update your PS5 to 14.22

  1. Check your version. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The current version is shown at the top.
  2. Update over the internet. In the same menu, choose Update System Software, then Update Using Internet. The download is reported at about 1.3 GB.
  3. Turn on automatic updates. Under System Software Update and Settings, enable automatic download and install of update files, so future patches arrive in rest mode.
  4. No internet on the console? Official Sony’s support page explains how to download the update file to a USB drive (FAT32 or exFAT) in a folder named PS5 with a subfolder named UPDATE, then install it from Safe Mode.
  5. Leave room for the preload. The game itself is the big download. Our GTA 6 file size guide and console prep checklist cover storage.

What about Xbox and PS5 Pro?

No Xbox firmware requirement has been reported for GTA 6; Xbox consoles generally require the latest system update to go online anyway. The PS5 Pro uses the same system software as the standard PS5, so the same 14.22 update applies. For the performance side, see GTA 6 on PS5 Pro: 30 or 60fps.
