The formula: 212 GB × 8 = 1,696 gigabits. Divide by your speed in megabits per second, then by 3,600 for hours. At 100 Mbps: 1,696,000 ÷ 100 = 16,960 seconds, or 4 hours 43 minutes. We use decimal gigabytes; if Rockstar’s figure is in binary units, add about 7%.

Five ways to get GTA 6 downloaded faster
- Start on November 10. Pre-order digitally and the preload can begin as soon as it opens: see the preload time for your country. A boxed copy only starts once you have the code, and retailers should have them from November 12.
- Use a cable. A wired Ethernet connection is usually faster and steadier than Wi-Fi, especially if the console is far from the router.
- Let it run overnight. On PS5, allow downloads in rest mode; on Xbox, keep automatic updates and the energy-saving setting that allows background downloads.
- Pause other downloads and streaming on the same network while GTA 6 downloads.

If you buy on launch day
Without a preload you start downloading when you buy, and you’ll be sharing servers with everyone else doing the same. At 100 Mbps that is still close to 5 or 6 hours before you can play. If you want to play at midnight local time on November 19 (see release time by country or the live countdown), pre-order and let it preload.

It depends on your connection. Using Rockstar’s official figure of up to 212 GB, a perfect 100 Mbps line needs about 4 hours 43 minutes and a 500 Mbps line about 57 minutes. Real downloads are usually slower, so allow about 25% more.
How long will GTA 6 take to download at 50 Mbps?
About 9 hours 25 minutes at a perfect 50 Mbps, or close to 12 hours at a more realistic 80% of that speed. Preloading from November 10 gives you nine days before launch.
Does preloading GTA 6 let me play sooner?
It doesn’t unlock the game early, but it means the download is done before midnight local time on November 19, so you can start straight away instead of waiting hours.
Why is my GTA 6 download slower than my internet speed?
Store servers, Wi-Fi, other devices on your network and the console’s own write speed all reduce real speeds. Millions of people downloading at once on November 10 and November 19 can slow things further.
Is 212 GB in GB or GiB?
Rockstar wrote 212 GB. We use decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). If the figure is actually binary gibibytes, add about 7% to every time in our table.
